MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular degeneration is a breakdown or deterioration of the macula. As part of the natural aging process, many older people develop macular degeneration. There are several types of macular problems, the most common of which is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can be "dry" or "wet." The majority of people have "dry" AMD, and vision loss is usually gradual. Approximately 10% of all AMD cases are "wet" macular degeneration.

Macular Degeneration can manifest itself in a variety of ways in different people. In its early stages, the condition may be imperceptible to some people. When words appear blurry on a page, a dark or empty area appears in your central vision, and straight lines appear distorted, these are all signs of vision loss.

Though there is no medication or cure for dry AMD, intravitreal injections may help stabilize or improve your vision if you have wet AMD. Dr. Galloway is a retinal specialist with a special interest in this disease, and he provides in-office injections to patients who he believes will benefit from this medication. He currently administers  Eylea and VABYSMO injections. If you notice any changes or distortions in your vision that do not appear normal, it is critical that you schedule a dilated eye exam soon.
